Division to Peace

The WORD in other words (2022) by Fr Atilano Corcuera SVD – Divine Word Seminary of Tagaytay

Thursday 29th Week in Ordinary Time

Let us admit that the Gospel today is hard to understand. Whereas after the resurrection the first word and greeting of Jesus to his disciples was PEACE, now we hear him broadcast DIVISION.

During the early centuries of the Church, division was a stark reality among Christians. Those who decided to follow Jesus found themselves rejected and looked down by their kins. A little later Christians, who were Jewish converts, began to be barred from the synagogue, their place of worship and growth in faith.

True, peace is a gift from God. But peace comes at a cost, because it embraces the heart, soul and whole being of a person. What are the costs of this peace?

1. Decision to follow Christ.

2. Loyalty to Christ which takes precedence over families.

3. Readiness to count all things but loss for the sake of Christ.

Peace comes at the cost of division at times, but saints proved that it is worth it. The peace of Christ overwhelms and propels us into the bossom of God’s Kingdom, also known us SHALOM, real peace!
