Call of Our Time

The WORD in other words by Fr Anthony Salas SVD – SVD House, Agusan del Sur

Friday 29th Week in Ordinary Time

One of the indicators of a world superpower is its national space program. Rich nations are in a race, allocating billions of dollars in space technology to bring a human being to Mars. Scientists and physicists interpret and try to predict the future that the neighboring red planet is within reach by earthlings.

The future may be bright for space programs, yet the reality of this present world calls for a different plan of action. Millions of children die every year because of disease or hunger. In many parts of the world, clean potable water is still a dream. Millions are still trafficked every year for labor and sexual exploitation. Millions of Christians are persecuted because of their faith, and many lives and families are being destroyed by drugs, alcohol, and other vices.

We have indeed reached a stage of human progress and scientific development that we are able to “interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky;” however, we seem not to see and hear the call of our present time. “Hypocrites,” says the Lord.

We ask for that grace not only to be able to interpret and understand but also the courage and passion to respond to the challenges of the body and the soul for many in our present time.
