Good Stewards

The WORD in other words (2022) by Fr Jose Rivas Suson SVD – University of San Carlos, Cebu City

Wednesday 29th Week in Ordinary Time

During the times of Jesus, the landowners often lived in the cities away from their agricultural land estates. So, the landowners appointed stewards to oversee the day-to-day operations.

This Gospel parable provides the disciples the proper attitude and behavior of a good steward expected of them in preparation of the coming of the Lord. The parable provides a picture of a good and bad steward. One steward beats the servants while the other distributes the food allowance at the proper time.

The apostle Peter asked the Lord if this parable is for them or for everyone. Personally, this is for us all who are the believers of Jesus who take on the role and responsibility of a steward, whether religious or lay.

Here are some qualities of a good steward: commitment to selfless service, responsibility and accountability without prodding from anybody. But, there are moments that responsibility appears more difficult than desirable. While the bad steward pampers his passions, the good steward is prone to frustration, fatigue, and impatience.

We need more good stewards in the Church today—those who can listen to others and cultivate good relationships with others.
