The WORD in other words (2006) by Father Allan Mechan SVD – Oriental Mindoro

Thursday 5th Week of Easter

Introduction

Pope John Paul II, born eighty-six years ago today, died on the morning of Sunday, April 3, 2005. The night before, the whole world seemed to know he was dying. Many of us tried to keep him in prayer, wherever we were, whatever we were doing. It was as if we were accompanying him in spirit, united across nations and cultures.

That Saturday night, I tried to text friends to ask for prayers, but my messages would not send. The networks were overloaded. Then I realized: countless people everywhere were doing the same — reaching out, asking for prayer, sharing their grief and love. The next morning, the headlines captured it well: “World at Pope’s bedside… Outpouring of love goes with him on his journey to immortality.”

The Pope’s Witness to the Body of Christ

The life and death of this holy man brought many together. Pope John Paul II helped us understand what it means to be Church — the Body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:12–13). He showed us our closeness, our strength in unity, our dependence on one another, and the bond of prayer and love that should unite us.

Jesus prayed that His disciples “may all be one, as You, Father, are in me and I in You” (John 17:21). At the Pope’s death, we experienced a glimpse of that unity — millions united in prayer, love, and faith.

Our Challenge

Could this universal experience of love and prayer become our daily experience as members of the Church? Too often, we only show our unity when tragedy strikes. But St. Paul reminds us: “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2). The Body of Christ is not just a reality in moments of crisis, but in every day of our lives.

Conclusion

The Pope’s passing revealed the Church’s strength in unity. May we continue this outpouring of love and prayer for one another, not only in times of loss, but in the ordinary journey of life. For we are all pilgrims on the way to immortality, and together we walk as one Body in Christ.

“Lord Jesus, make us one in Your love, that our daily lives may reflect the unity of Your Body, the Church.”
