The WORD in other words (2010) by Father Elmer Ibarra SVD – Australia
Feast day of Saint Mathias, Apostles – May 14
Many people can only give to the extent of what they have experienced in life. A child raised by a generous mother often grows up to be generous as well. In the same way, Jesus’ love for us flows from the love He experienced from His heavenly Father. “The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in His hands” (John 3:35). Out of love, the Father entrusted all authority to the Son, and Jesus, in turn, showed His love by giving total obedience to the Father.
It is often said that there can be obedience without love, but there is no love without obedience. Jesus demonstrated this truth: “I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me” (John 8:28). His obedience was the fullest expression of His love. For us, remaining in Jesus’ love means keeping His commandments: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind… and love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37–39).
Jesus is generous beyond measure. He wants us to experience the same love He received from His Father. “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love” (John 15:9). This love is what sustains us in times of conflict, economic hardship, and health crises. It is a love that gives hope, courage, and strength to overcome life’s difficulties.
We are reminded today of St. Matthias, chosen to replace Judas Iscariot and become a witness to the resurrection (Acts 1:21–22). Tradition tells us he spread the Gospel as far as the Caspian Sea and suffered martyrdom in Colchis (modern-day Georgia). His life is a testimony of living and sharing Christ’s love, even to the point of sacrifice.
To remain in Jesus’ love is to live in obedience, generosity, and hope. It is to let His Spirit guide us so that our lives become a witness of the Father’s love.
“Lord Jesus, help me to remain in Your love, to obey Your commandments, and to share generously the love I have received from You.”
