Introduction

Have you ever wondered why it is difficult to obey certain individuals, yet exceptionally easy to obey others? Could it be because obedience is deeply rooted in relationship?

It is obvious: it is easier to follow people we know than those we do not know at all. It is even easier to comply with people we love than with those we dislike. Obedience is closely connected with knowing and loving. Without these two, obedience becomes forced and fragile. If we want people to obey us, we must first lay the foundation — building genuine, qualitative relationships with those around us. “Let all that you do be done in love” (1 Corinthians 16:14).

Jesus’ Example of Obedience

In response to Philip’s request, Jesus beautifully illustrates His intimate relationship with the Father (John 14:8–11). His incomparable union with the Father compelled Him to give obedience par excellence. Jesus knew the Father well, and the Father knew Him (John 10:15). He trusted that the Father desired nothing bad for Him. More importantly, Jesus loved the Father, and the Father loved Him (John 15:9). Because of this, He obeyed: “I seek not my own will but the will of Him who sent me” (John 5:30). His mission was to reveal the Father to us. Truly, knowing and loving precede obedience.

Our Challenge

How about us? Do the people around us feel connected with us? Are we the kind of leaders or superiors who simply demand obedience by virtue of authority? Or do we invite obedience through relationship — by being known and loved? St. Paul reminds us: “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4). Authority must be exercised in love and relationship.

Conclusion

Obedience is not blind submission. It is the fruit of trust, knowledge, and love. Jesus shows us that true obedience flows from intimacy with the Father. Let us strive to build relationships that inspire obedience, not demand it.

“Lord Jesus, help me to know You more deeply, love You more faithfully, and obey You more willingly” (cf. John 14:15).
