The WORD in other words (2006) by Father Sonny de Riviera SVD – Rome, Italy
Palm Sunday / Passion Sunday – A
On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon and declared: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” His achievement was hailed as a triumph of science, courage, and human progress. Yet today, as we recall Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, we are invited to reflect on a far greater triumph — one not of science or exploration, but of salvation.
Jesus’ Deliberate Entry
Palm Sunday assures us that Jesus is the true Messiah. His entry into Jerusalem was no accident. He deliberately instructed His disciples to find a donkey, fulfilling the prophecy of Zechariah: “See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey” (Zechariah 9:9). This public declaration of His identity precipitated His arrest and death. The praises of the crowd were fleeting; their shouts of “Hosanna!” would soon turn into cries of “Crucify Him!”
The Nature of His Kingdom
Palm Sunday teaches us that Christ’s kingdom is not political or military, but spiritual and eternal. His victory was foreshadowed when He raised Lazarus from the dead, and fulfilled when He Himself rose from the grave. Palm Sunday anticipates Easter — the triumph of life over death.
The Challenge of True Discipleship
The crowds who hailed Jesus did not understand the cost of discipleship. Their lack of commitment was revealed when they abandoned Him. The same danger exists today. Many profess Jesus as Lord without grasping the implications. To follow Him means more than lip service; it requires faith, obedience, and commitment.
Conclusion
Palm Sunday is not just a commemoration of a past event. It is a call to examine our own discipleship. Are we genuine followers of Christ, or do we only honor Him with words? May the Lord grant us grace to perceive the true meaning of Palm Sunday — that Jesus is the Messiah, the King who conquers death, and the Savior who calls us to follow Him with faith and commitment.
“Lord Jesus, Hosanna to You, our King. Teach me to follow You not only in celebration but also in sacrifice, so that I may share in Your victory over death.”
