The WORD in other words (2006) by Father Doms Flores SVD – Autralia
Thursday 3rd Week of Lent
From today’s Gospel we can draw three unchangeable truths that are both life-giving and practical. Jesus’ miracles and teachings are not just stories of the past; they are invitations for us to live differently today.
1. Empower the Mute to Speak
Jesus healed the mute man, enabling him to speak (cf. Luke 11,14) . While we may not perform miraculous healings, we can still empower those with speech or hearing impairments. We can help them overcome isolation, raise their self-esteem, and affirm their dignity. To empower them means to respect their communication needs and encourage others to do the same. Watching people communicate in sign language is a reminder that every person has a voice worth hearing.
2. Be an Instrument of Unity Jesus silenced His critics by declaring: “A kingdom divided against itself cannot stand” (Luke 14,17). Division weakens, but unity strengthens. Today, our world is fractured by ideologies, religions, and politics. Yet Christ’s mission of peace continues through the Church. The Pope, as Pontifex — bridge-builder — works to unite peoples. We too can build bridges through ecumenism, dialogue, and reconciliation, so that “all may be one” (John 17:21).
3. Make a Stand for Christ Jesus said: “Whoever is not with me is against me” (Luke 11:23). There is no middle ground in discipleship. The Church in Laodicea was warned: “You are lukewarm… I will spit you out of my mouth” (Revelation 3:16). Faith demands conviction, not compromise. Doris Ann from our parish once realized this truth and changed her life radically, becoming active in ministry. Her story reminds us that Christ calls each of us to wholehearted commitment.
The Gospel challenges us to empower, unite, and take a stand. These are not abstract ideals but concrete ways of living our faith. Let us embrace them with courage and joy, knowing that Christ Himself strengthens us.
“Lord Jesus, help me to empower others, to build unity, and to stand firmly with You. May my life bear witness to Your truth and love.”
