The WORD in other words (2006) by Fr Martin Mandin SVD – Divine Word Seminary of Tagaytay
Wednesday 3rd Week of Lent
On the way back to the seminary in Davao City, a driver once shared: “I am happy when I see my passenger happy too. I cannot imagine life without serving others. If I retire from driving, I want to be active in our chapel or Christian community, otherwise life is dull.”
Later, at a repair shop, the owner explained why they had been closed: “My wife and I went to help a couple whose marriage was in trouble. In our little way, we wanted to support them.” This couple was active in the Couples for Christ movement.
These simple testimonies reveal the dynamism of God’s law lived out in daily life.
Jesus teaches in the Gospel that He did not come to abolish the law or the prophets, but to fulfill them (Matthew 5:17). God’s law is not a rigid set of rules; it is a synthesis of divine and human wisdom. Beneath the word of God is the Spirit of God, alive and dynamic. As Isaiah says: “My word shall not return to me empty, but shall accomplish that which I purpose” (Isaiah 55:11).
The taxi driver’s joy in serving others and the couple’s sacrifice to help a struggling marriage are living examples of this Spirit at work. Their selflessness shows how God’s law transforms lives.
Religious experience is not sustained by mere ritual but by embracing God’s law with sincerity. To persevere in service, we must taste the sweetness of the Lord (Psalm 34:8) and share it with others. When we live God’s law, it becomes not a burden but a source of joy, guidance, and strength.
God’s law is alive, dynamic, and transformative. It calls us to selflessness, service, and love. Let us embrace it wholeheartedly, so that our lives may bear witness to its sweetness and wisdom.
“Lord, help me to embrace Your law not as a burden but as a joy. May I taste Your goodness and share it with others through service and love.”
