The WORD in other words (2002) by a Sister Servant of the Holy Spirit of Perpetual Adoration (SSpSAP or Pink Sisters)
Saturday 2nd Week of Advent
Even before the full flowering of social consciousness, that is EDSA people power, he was already very much into social action. He championed the cause of the poor and the minority. He did not solicit favors from the rich and influential; he feared no one, not even popular opinion. He was misunderstood by those who were convinced that the only place for a parish priest was the rectory.
Without his saying so, I knew he suffered greatly because of this. And I wondered why he must suffer for being and doing good. Then the answer came by way of a line from a song: “This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.”
This poignant line also brings to mind two beautiful people: Saint John the Baptist and Saint John of the Cross, the Carmelite mystic whose feast day we celebrate today (December 14). Two beautiful people who did not find a welcome in this world like what is said by the Lord in the Gospel today about John the Baptist: They did not recognize him but did to him whatever they pleased.
Two of a kind; men of deep prayer. Both were prophets who spoke fearlessly of the truth, come what may. We still have people like them in our midst, thank God!
Let us open our eyes and our hearts to recognize these beautiful people who make a difference in our lives.
