The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Jun Pateño SVD – New Jersey, USA

Tuesday 4th Week of Easter

The Hanukkah Festival is a Jewish Feast of theRededication of the Jerusalem Temple which was defiled by pagan rulers. The Jewish people also called this feast the festival of light. Jesus, being a Jew, was present during this festival as the Gospel today narates.

At the Portico of Solomon, people interrogated Jesus about when he was going to fulfill his messianic role. The miracles that Jesus had performed were not enough to answer their questions for they didn’t want to see what was right before their eyes.

He answered them by clearly defining His authority – “I am the Good Shepherd… My sheep hear my voice. I know them and they follow me.” (John 10,27) Being the true light of the world, Jesus took advantage of this occasion to deliver this message, as part of His prophetic mission.

Through this light, Jesus proclaims that we can see who God truly is and we can find the true path to heaven. With his tremendous trust in God the Father, Jesus reveals to us too the importance of this trust that we ought to have in him as our Good Shepherd.

Also, Jesus offers us security by telling us that we must have that abiding relationship with the Living God. He assures us of the security of peace and protection from evil.

Believing that life’s road is not always paved with roses, we experience painand sickness but let us persevere to the end and be convinced that the Lord, as our Light and Good Shepherd, will lead us to that ultimate victory and safety in his everlasting abode in heaven.
