Tuesday 21st Week in Ordinary Time
In today’s Good News, we hear the strong words of Jesus directed at the leaders of His time: “Woe to you, hypocrites… !” (Matthew 23:23). He cites practices that reveal their hypocrisy—religious observance without sincerity, and moral teaching without integrity.
Jesus specifically criticized the Pharisees for their two-facedness: they appeared loyal to the Law but refused to live its spirit. Their concern was more about appearances than about truth.
This passage is a clarion call for all leaders—men and women who exercise authority and influence—to examine themselves. Leadership is not about prestige or appearances but about guiding others with justice, mercy, and faith. “It is required of stewards that they be found faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2).
Jesus warns against focusing on secondary details while neglecting what is essential: “You have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith” (Matthew 23:23).
The example of washing cup and dish points to a deeper meaning—concern for interior purity. What matters most is the cleanliness of heart, upright intention, and consistency between word and deed. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8).
Happy are we if we take to heart today’s message. The Gospel challenges us to live with integrity, to align our actions with our words, and to let our leadership—whether in family, community, or Church—be marked by sincerity and compassion.
“Let us not love in word or speech but in deed and in truth” (1 John 3:18).
