Power of the Cross

The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Emil Pati SVD – Claveria Cagayan

4th Sunday of Lent – B

Many years ago, very common were the areas called “dead spots.” Instantly your gadget is disconnected rendering it ‘lifeless’ for some time. It becomes active again once there is signal coming from a cell site. Over the years, however, these “dead spots” have been animated as more towering cell sites are being strategically mounted everywhere. Network signals are made available at any corner 24/7, so that now, “smart people use globe energized by the sun!”

Today, the 4th Sunday of Lent, the readings invite us to focus and reflect on threefold Lenten themes.

1. A disconnected and disowned people found its way back to God. People who were literally dead because of treachery and abominations were reunited to God, the source of life. (1st reading)

2. Because of transgressions we are dead to sin but God’s love brought us life in Christ. (2nd reading)

3. The overwhelming power of the Cross as pre-figured by the “cross” Moses lifted up for healing and staying alive. (Gospel)

Put these three themes together and a picture of that Good Friday afternoon at Calvary comes in full view. Three crosses! Yes, three crosses with one at the middle slightly elevated but strangely, the center of attraction. A sight to behold!

Going back to the “dead spots” I mentioned earlier, there are also areas in our life that “cannot be reached” even when the signal is there. In Lent let us face these “dead spots” like all sorts of pain due to separation from God, broken relationships, failures, and so on.

As we recognize the power of the Cross of Christ, let the signal of the Resurrection bring light and life to each Christian, family, community, parish and the Church as a whole. Have a meaningful Lenten observance and glorious Easter celebrations!
