Giving Witness to Christ

The gospel reminds me of the story of a priest who wanted to introduce Jesus to an atheist who was searching a way to believe in God. The priest brought him to a church and showed him the crucifix in the sanctuary telling him that the God of Christians suffered and died on the cross to save us from our sins. Of course the atheist could not accept this God. So he left the priest behind without acknowledging Jesus.

Jesus tells us that if we acknowledge the Son of Man, the Crucified and Risen One, we will be acknowledged by Jesus before God! Acknowledging Jesus in one’s life entails openness and humility.

A way of acknowledging him is by giving witness to his teachings, and by living a life worthy of our Christian calling. Yet witnessing Christ can be a dangerous business especially in places where Christians are not accepted, but it is also attended by the consoling presence of God’s spirit for our comfort and strength.

Let us not be surprised when people will still criticize us even if we put into practice our Christian beliefs and the gospel values. Sometimes we encounter difficulties, opposition, trials, and when that occasion arises we will experience the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Trust in God at all times.
