God Alone

The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Alex Vitualla SVD – Palawan

Friday 28th Week in Ordinary Time

A little amount of yeast leavens the dough. It is a little magic after a few minutes. Hypocrisy, the leaven of the Pharisees, speaks of corruption and evil disposition that influence or ‘ferment’ the surrounding community.

Hypocrisy and following Christ cannot go together. One cannot hide and be transparent at the same time. Hypocrisy is simply a self-created prison and gnawing restlessness. Truth sets us free! Jesus Christ, the God of truth, is our true freedom and transparency. “Be not afraid,” Jesus assures us twice in this Gospel passage. And twice He reminds us: “Be afraid of the one who after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna.”

Let us heed the call of our master and let us ask His constant help that we may follow Him until the end of our lives. One of my favorite Saint, Augustine, said: “My God, if You were to offer to change places, so that I would become God and You Augustine, I would say: No! I prefer that You be God and that I be Augustine or whatever, what does it matter? You are my happiness, and not me.” God alone is our peace and happiness.
