The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Emil Lim SVD – Saint Jude Catholic School, Manila
Monday 6th Week of Easter
Do you always believe what you read in text messages, advertisements, news on facebook and twitter, or even what you hear on main stream media? When information comes fast and easy, fake news and deliberate misinformation flourish too.
This is another nasty attack of the Prince of Lies to mislead our generation. Truth, in this case, is the first victim. This is all the more reason for us to be careful, responsible, discerning, and critical in dealing with information. It is axiomatic among investigative journalists to say, “Trust, but always verify!”
The early Christians to whom John the Evangelist wrote the gospel must have been confused by many untruths corrupting their faith in Jesus. Today, we are probably not any better.
The enemy of truth may discredit the testimony of the apostles or even kill it all together, for he is still at it to this day, but the faithful ones must have remembered this promise of Jesus. He will send the Advocate, the Spirit of truth that comes from the Father to testify. This is the Easter promise of the coming Pentecost.
Here are Jesus’s pointers for us to live by. When in doubt, confused, or just having the gut feeling that things are not right, pray for the Advocate, the Helper. Seek where the Spirit resides: in the Bible, in the Church, in your spiritual guide, then live by the Spirit.
If you do this, the other promise of Jesus then applies: “Seek and you shall find!”
