It is hard to believe that there was a great deal of grass in that deserted place (not mentioned in today’s Gospel but mentioned in the other Gospels. The presence of the grass is significant since it connotes an abundance of food in the area.

Jesus, in today’s Gospel, is trying to portray the abundance of blessings even in the deserted place. The miracle of the five barley loaves and two fish is the manifestation that Jesus can multiply whatever little that we have when we offer them to the Lord. As mentioned in the Gospel, Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to the people and as much of the fish.

The generosity of the boy to share the little he had was used by Jesus to make a great miracle. In the Old Testament, Elijah multiplied the little that the widow offered to the prophet. It is in the spirit of sharing that the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves took place. The more we share our resources, the more it will multiply a hundredfold. Let us continue sharing the many blessings that God has given us to those who are in need.
