The WORD in other words (2022) by Fr Sammy Clarin SVD — HNU, Tagbilaran City, Bohol
Monday 1st Week of Advent
The centurion’s faith in today’s Gospel is remarkable. He could have requested one of his men to approach Jesus to let him heal his sick servant. But he did not. The centurion himself went to Jesus and begged him to cure his servant. What a deep, sincere, and honest faith!
He believed in the capacity of Jesus to heal. Here, too, we can gauge the depth of his love for his ill servant. Thus, Jesus was amazed, not only because of his deep faith in him but also because of his great love for his servant which dissolved all barriers of positions and possessions.
“I will come and cure him.” Jesus manifests God’s mercy, compassion, and love and shows that the reign of God knows no boundaries. God welcomes everybody into his kingdom. His kingdom is inclusive.
Do I amaze Jesus with my faith? Is my faith in Jesus as strong as that of the centurion? What does it mean to me when I utter the words of the centurion before taking Jesus in holy communion, “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, only say the word, and my soul will be healed.”
