The WORD in other words (2006) by Father Vic Rayco SVD – Saint Jude Catholic School, Manila
Tuesday 3rd Week of Easter
“Ang importante, mahalaga!”
At first, this saying may sound silly or like a joke. But it is neither stupid nor funny. It is serious and full of wisdom. In fact, this is exactly what today’s readings want to remind us.
Losing Sight of What Matters
We need reminders like this because we easily get caught up with many concerns and lose sight of what is truly important.
- We get so caught up in building the house that we forget it is the family — the home — that is important.
- We get so caught up in grooming ourselves to meet others that we forget it is our attitude and relationship with them that truly matters.
The same thing happened in the time of Jesus. The Jews were so focused on the Temple and the Law that they forgot the heart of it all — their relationship with God and with others. They were so caught up with the manna their ancestors ate and with Moses that they forgot it was God who gave the manna. They were so caught up with physical life that they forgot real life means much more than filling the stomach.
The Invitation of the Readings
“Ang importante, mahalaga!”
Today’s readings invite us to re-examine our concerns, to re-evaluate what consumes our time and energy, and to see if we have lost sight of our ideals and dreams.
Back to the Basics What is truly important?
- God
- Prayer
- Family
- Love
- Forgiveness
- Jesus
These are the foundations of life. These are what endure. As Jesus Himself said: “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life” (John 6:27).
Conclusion Let us not be distracted by what is secondary. Let us return to what is truly important and essential. Ang importante, mahalaga!
“Lord Jesus, help me to focus on what truly matters — You, my family, and love that endures.”
