The WORD in other words (2010) by Fr Lino Nicasio SVD – Saint Jude Catholic School, Manila

The parable of the lamp and the parable of the measure contain two interesting spiritual lessons. The parable of the lamp reminds us that that a lamp is placed where its light will do the most good. A lamp is not meant to be hidden or covered because it will not benefit anyone at all.

Similarly, it would be the primary duty of every disciple to place Jesus on a public lamp stand for everyone to see. God did not send Jesus to be concealed or hidden. A disciple is not to hide the Gospel either by the failure to proclaim the message of Jesus or by less than exemplary Christian living.

The church is also to be a light to the world by faithful proclamation of the Gospel and righteous living. Nothing is more worthy of being heard than the word of God; example is also the best teacher.

Meanwhile, the parable of the measure teaches that he who is open to Christ’s teaching will definitely learn more than he who is indifferent and disinterested; he who is spiritually stubborn and unyielding will never learn anything.

A person who does not possess a teachable spirit will be left with nothing. Judas Iscariot is a classic example. Only those who have good and honest hearts will truly understand. “To these more will be given,”   Jesus added.
