The WORD in other words (2009) by Fr Roger Solis SVD – Catholic Trade Manila
Jesus being the Messiah in the prophecy of Isaih (9,6) is the Prince of peace or as he himself suggested to give peace in John 14,27, then why is it that he contradicts himself in today’s Gospel when he says, “Do not think that I have come to bring peace upon the earth. I have come to bring not peace but the sword…?” (10,34)
For most literal interpreters of the Sacred Scriptures this statement poses a great contradiction for it defies human logic, but for every believer it is but an invitation for self-introspection. This presumption comes from the fact that every reality can be viewed differently from different perspectives.
We should not be limited with common perception, literal interpretation, and subjective analysis because truth itself is evolving. Hence, there is a wide variety of contexts that affect our perception certain events to happen.
Take, for instance, the context when Jesus delivered his teachings in the Gospel for today. Most people during the time of Christ had a strong familial bond and had deep-seated patriarchal orientation. That is to say, family relations takes precedence above anythings else. In other words, abuses, injustices, and even of truth truth can be suppressed within families or for the sake of the clan or the greater family. In this way, following Jesus means going against the opinion of the family, embracing the teachings of Jesus is to reject family traditions and practices.
Hence, the sword that he brings is a symbolic representation of being firm against unjust traditions in the family. Christ implicitly emphasized that he comes to straighten the path of family life because even during those times, he knew the importance of family in the lives of each one.
Yes, Christ is the prince of peace because the sword that he brings is a symbol of courage that will make us steadfast against challenges in life and the commitment take take the side of Jesus against my family and relatives.
Peace is when it is Christ who rules and lives in our hearts.
