Perfect Treasures

Friday 11th Week in Ordinary Time

Many Filipinos may have already heard of the Yamashita treasure, believed to be the wealth of 12 Asian countries accumulated through many years by General Yamashita Tomayuki, a Japanese general during World War II. The treasure is believed to have been scattered and buried in various caves and tunnels in the Philippines.

Many treasure-hunters of today are spending time and money to search these hidden treasures. But so far the treasure remains as a story, a puddle difficult to solve.

In our Gospel today, Jesus asks us to store up treasure in heaven. It must be something that is of high value, long lasting, and which neither moth nor decay can destroy nor thieves can break in and steal. These treasures are more valuable than any other treasure on earth.

Heavenly treasures are not only things that come after this life. Treasures in heaven may also mean something that we should have in this life for the Kingdom of God. They are eyes of the body. They are lamps of our life with which we could see Christ and recognize him in others.

Love, joy, peace, patience, forgiveness, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control are perfect “treasures”. They will not melt or disappear. They will be ours and nobody can take them from us!
