Believing Christ’s Resurrection

The WORD in other words (2009) by Fr. Vic Rayco, SVD – St. Jude Catholic School, Manila

Saturday in Octave of Easter

Mary Magdalene reported seeing the risen Lord; the disciples did not believe.  Two came back from the country reporting that they saw the risen Lord; the disciples did not believe.  Jesus finally came to rebuke them for their unbelief. He then sent them to preach the gospel to all creatures.

What does it take for one to believe?

Communication experts tell us that the message is not what is sent or spoken.  It is what is received.  So that if the message is misunderstood, there is miscommunication.  If the message is not received or understood, there is a breakdown of communication.

If that is so, the problem with the disciples’ unbelief was not the message of the resurrection or even the messenger.  It was their unbelieving hearts.

We now ask ourselves, what is there that keeps us from believing?  Is it our pre-conceived ideas about God since childhood that we fear God?  Is it despair that we could not believe there is forgiveness and newness of life?  Is it the pain we bear that we cannot see beyond it, towards heaven and happiness?

The one who has received or understood the Gospel will go tell every creature.
