The WORD in other words (2009) by Fr Marcelo Cataneo SVD — Agusan del Sur

Monday 4th Week of Lent

JPIC-IDC an NGO initiated by the Divine Word Missionaries in Cebu City,is involved in the implementation of projects on human development in the Visayas and Mindanao. In the occasion of an external monitoring of one of our major projects, the consultant was listening very attentively as the project staff presented the whole program of activities already conducted with the corresponding statistics on the quantitative level.

During the presentation we thought all along that we had made a good impression on the consultant. To our surprise, she gave us these questions: “What can you say about the impact of all these activities on the beneficiaries? Has this project made any difference so far?”

Jesus in today’s Gospel shows himself not interested in the number of miracles he had performed, or in the number of people he could draw near him. Rather, he was more concerned of the change in the lifestyle of people motivated by his message.

So many times we hear the SONA, or the parish priest report to the priests assembly, or many things about organizations involved in human development, and we got the impression that there are so many things being done that can be proved through statistics. But  the bottom line question remains: How do these programs and projects make a significant impact on our people, most especially the marginalized?

Going even deeper in our reflection, we ask ourselves: After having heard so much about Jesus and having done so many things in His name, how has His message changed me as a person, and us as a community?
