The WORD in other words (2019) by Fr Atilano Corcuera SVD – Divine Word Seminary of Tagaytay

If we connect the Gospel reading today to the first reading we will see the theme of the liturgy of the Word which is forgiveness. Why should we forgive?
Firstly because not forgiving brings sickness to our soul and body. Some diseases which not forgiving brings are indigestion, insomnia, hyper acidity, ulcer, and even dandruff. The soul is also infected with a disease called misery.
Secondly, not forgiving makes us prisoners. It restricts our freedom. We can no longer enjoy the freedom of the children of God. To be free and healthy we need to forgive.
Here are the elements of forgiveness: (1) Effort. To face the hurt that is perceived done, then to ask the question: “Now what “? (2) Consider some good qualities of the enemy. (3) Pray for grace. Forgiveness is being like God who lets his sun shine on the good and the bad; his rain falls to the just and unjust. (4) Decision.
To forgive, one does not rely on feelings or emotions, rather one chooses to do something. She/he does something which she/he could control. She/he begins to be free.
There is a nice quote I have read about pardoning. Here is a modified version: “Forgiveness will give you the key to unlock the prison that confines your health and sanity.”
