The WORD in other words (2018) by Jingling Rochar SVD – Saint Michael Community, USC Cebu City
Feast of Saint Andrew, Apostle – November 30
The feast we celebrate today, that of St. Andrew’s, and our Gospel remind us of our calling to become disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Gospel is an account about the call of the first disciples who were fishermen. Jesus invited them by saying: “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men”. They heard Jesus’ invitation. They left their nets, their boat, and their father. They decided to follow Him. What does this mean to us?
To be a disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ may simply mean to become His follower. It is to be identified with our Lord by learning His teachings and putting them into action. In short, our words and deeds should identify us with our Lord.
In the Gospel, the first disciples upon the invitation of Jesus left their livelihood and families to follow him. Jesus does not demand of us to leave our jobs and families. Instead, he asks that our jobs and families should not hinder us from becoming disciples. They should not be reasons not to be of service to others especially the poor. True witnessing through kind words and good deeds makes us genuine disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Because of our baptism, the Triune God dwells in each one of us. We must then allow the Triune God to manifest Himself through and in us. May our words and deeds show this to be the case.
May the love of the Triune God flow from within us. In this way, we can reach out to all we encounter in our lives.
