The WORD in other words (2014) by Fr Francisco Estepa SVD – Holy Name University, Bohol
Friday 24th Week in Ordinary Time
A rich chieftain got attracted to the wife of a passing tourist. The chieftain told the tourist that he is willing to trade her weight with gold. The tourist told the chieftain that he would like to be given some few days. The chieftain asked the tourist if he wants to think it over. But the tourist said no. He just wanted to fatten her up.
The story may be funny but it tells us something about the selfish tendency of human nature. One would be willing to let go of something valuable, it could be a principle, a belief, a person for the allure of money.
The opposite could be said of the women who followed Jesus. They were willing to share what they had to assist Jesus in his preaching.
In naming the women, Luke not only wants the people to know that there are women in Jesus’ life but also the role they played ni Jesus’ mission. They practiced the spirit of charity.
Yes, there is another way in looking at possessions, riches, or money which the women in the Gospel are teaching us — the value of sharing.
