The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Fermin Galolo SVD – Catholic Trade Manila
Tuesday 15th Week in Ordinary Time
At the beginning of Christ’s public ministry, he immediately called the people to repent – with a sense of urgency and authority. At times Jesus reproved and even threatened the people with what could happen to them if they did not turn away from their sins. Today’s Gospel provides a beautiful example of that occasion.
Frustration is evident in Christ’s voice as He reproached the towns of Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum for their failure to reform and to believe in him, this despite their witnessing many of Jesus’ powerful deeds and miracles.
They remained indifferent to Him and refused to follow His voice and be part of His mission of bringing peace and salvation to all.
And while Jesus had initially come as a fulfillment to God’s promise to the Jews, Jesus’ warning was explicit: If the chosen people continue to reject salvation that God is offering through Jesus, then it will be offered to others who are more willing to receive the Good News.
Jesus’ warning reminded me of a wise quote from the movie, Spiderman, “to whom more is given, more is also being expected.” Everyday we receive the Lord’s bountiful blessings. Do we take these as an opportunity for growth in faith, and moving closer to Him? Do we allow these blessings to multiply through us, as we reach out to our neighbors, that God’s deeds might remain until this day? Lastly, do we allow Christ’s words and deeds to echo in our lives and move us to repentance?
This is a great reminder for us all. We have heard Christ’s words, experienced His mighty deeds, received salvation from His sacrifice, and now we are challenged not to allow these great gifts to come to naught.
