The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Simon Boiser SVD – Germany
Tuesday 14th Week in Ordinary Time
Many of us live unavoidably busy lives: too much to do, so little time. Work in the office and at home seems never-ending. Many have no control of their time: their bosses and customers, their kids and friends define their schedule for them.
In our meritocratic society, we are forced to perform fast and efficient, without feeling we have accomplished anything worthwhile. Many of us work hard to pay our bills, bring food on the table, secure an uncertain future. But is life just the hustle and bustle of daily occupations or is there more to it?
There are still people who give extra time and effort on spiritual and social pursuits, without any immediate utilitarian reward for themselves. They volunteer in the church and other social organizations to contribute to the welfare of others and the betterment of society.
These unnamed and unsung heroes and saints have made a difference in the lives of the poor and the forgotten. They serve as God’s agents by answering another’s prayer. They work for a cause and not for applause. They affirm Churchill’s thoughts: “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.”
When Jesus talks about the abundant harvest and few laborers, he invites us to go beyond our earthly daily concerns. We are also called to work for God and to be his missionaries to others.
Many people are ready to give their lives to Christ, if someone would show them how. God answers our prayers by using us. Be prepared for God to use you to show another person the way to him.
