The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Gerry Donato SVD – Divine Word Seminary, Tagaytay City
Saturday 13th Week in Ordinary Time
Reading the gospel text (Mt 9,14-17) today makes me feel that Jesus had probably been invited and gone many times to a wedding during his time, like the wedding at Cana. If not, he would probably not be so familiar with many things in connection with the setting of a wedding. More importantly, he would not be telling about his Father who invites us to his Kingdom as in the parable of the Wedding Feast (Mt 22:1-14).
What does Jesus intend to tell us about God in a setting of a wedding?
Jesus is saying something about his Father as bridegroom in a wedding. God’s presence as a bridegroom calls for a joyous celebration. Certainly, this is how we often feel and discover when we open our hearts to accept God in our lives.
We find so much peace in our hearts when we humbly and faithfully pray before Him daily in the Blessed Sacrament. We find so much joy and comfort in our lives when we attend the Eucharist daily and receive Holy Communion to begin our day.
We find so much fulfillment in our hearts every time we learn to live in the way Jesus lives, like his forgiveness to others, his compassion, his generosity and his mercy to the poor.
God comes to us today as a life partner. We can never separate ourselves from him just as he can never separate himself from us. Without God as life partner, life would be so sad, meaningless and miserable.
But with him always on our side, there is always joy and peace in our hearts. Indeed, this is true. Let us never doubt what Jesus says to us today.
