Christ First and All

The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Alan Meechan SVD – Melgar, Naujan, Oriental Mindoro

Friday 11th Week in Ordinary Time

It is not uncommon for us to follow strategies that enable us to attain particular, unquestioned, selfish ends, and to prioritize our own personal treasures. This experience can happen even in our spiritual lives. Often, whatever right thing we do is ultimately whatever will lead to our own personal advantage.

How can we fight this tendency? Christ must always come first in our lives. Let us try to come to know Christ and let Christ live in us more every day.

Let us know him through the scriptures (preferably the daily readings of the Mass), through regular reception of the sacraments, through prayer, and through imitating Christ in our lives.

Those who pray the breviary faithfully can find great comfort in having Christ as their first companion when they wake in the morning and their last before they sleep at night.

We could make our own the old Irish hymn Saint Patrick’s Breastplate: “Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me. Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.”
