“Fear the deer!” that’s the fighting stance the Milwaukee bucks used to win an NBA championship. Instilling fear, too, is a favorite mechanism oppressive powers use to stifle opposition.

When Jesus was on his way to suffer and die in Jerusalem, the gospel portrays Jesus as having no fear; “while the ruler of the world is coming, he has no power over me…”

Jesus cannot be taken over by fear imposed from the outside: “I love the father and that I do just as the father has commanded me.”

Jesus was able to overcome fear and even moved his disciples to get up and press on forward to Jerusalem because he knew that the powerful love of the Father would make them victorious.

A witness says: There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear (I John 4,18a).
