Missionary Disciples

The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Jonathan Letada SVD – Balot, Tondo Manila

April 25 – Feast of Saint Mark, the Evangelist

“We are all missionary disciples. By virtue of our baptism, we are all missionary disciples. Whatever our position in the Church or level of instruction in the faith, we are agents of evangelization.” (Pope Francis)

The gospel story is one of the most important episodes of the post-resurrection narratives in the life of Jesus. Jesus appeared to the disciples in Galilee, where their friendship had begun.

It was in Galilee that the disciples encountered Jesus in person, where their relationship developed, where formation had taken place and the love for the mission grew. It was in Galilee where they were commissioned to be partners of Jesus in His mission.

Like the first group of Jesus’ disciples, we are called to be partners in Jesus’ mission. Our lives as baptized Catholics are a mission in themselves. We are all missionaries. The Spirit has gifted us all with the resources to fulfill our commitment as missionaries. And our primary missionary commitment is to give witness to the gospel of love, peace, joy and justice.

With Pope Francis, let us say these words: “I am a mission on this earth. That is the reason why I am here in this world. I am sealed by this mission of bringing light, blessing, raising up, healing and freeing.”
