The WORD in other words (2018) by Sister Mildred Arcos SSpS – Irosin, Sorsogon

Friday 3rd Week of Easter

December 25, 2016. Christmas Midnight Eucharistic Celebration! The nasty weather did not dampen the spirit of Christmas. The church was full to capacity. People smiled and greeted each other with Christmas cheers for peace.

On the contrary, along the highway thousands of people from104 public buses were stranded due to typhoon Nina. The weather prevented them from crossing the raging seas or flying the windy skies to their destinations in Visayas and Mindanao.

Aware of the situation in our town, Fr. Albert Futol, parish priest of St. Michael the Archangel of Irosin, Sorsogon, together with the parishioners, decided to share the midnight mass collection to the stranded ones. Right away the service committee took over and food was ready in the morning.

Sr. Ester, SspS and I, linked ourselves with the Service Committee and helped share food to the hungry, bus by bus. We further inched ourselves into the crowds amidst heavy downpour. We listened to their pains, sorrows and felt their hunger too. In this little way we could sustain their hope to see their loved ones.

Government officials and police forces made themselves visible for emergencies. Individuals came with their food and drink to share. Love, kindness, and compassion are a multiplication of bread personified in a luminal experience of bread broken and shared.

Yes, the Father sent His Son to give life, to save His people. Am I ready to be broken and shared for others? In what way can I become bread not only in a time like this but also in my daily life?
