The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Florencio Lagura SVD – New Jersey, USA
Wednesday 2nd Week of Easter
When he finally delved into the topic of religion and asked whether any believed God existed, the university professor gave a categorical “no.” Reason, he claimed, did not warrant belief in God’s existence. The businessman maintained what he called a healthy but pragmatic skepticism: business progresses better without the “burden” of a God.
When the camera turned to the convict, everyone was surprised when he clearly said, “I truly believe that there is a God, for only a good, loving and merciful God could have created and kept alive a man like me. Knowing who I am and the evil I did, only a living and loving God is the explanation why I am and why I live.”
Only “the fool says in his heart, there is no God!” (Psalm 14:1) Nevertheless, God’s love is so great that only he could ever create even foolish and evil men. But, at the same time, His love keeps alive their hope that he would touch their hearts with an eternally burning and cleansing flame.
He is a God who never abandoned the world he created; he saw that it was good (Genesis 1:10,19,22). As part of his divine plan, he sent his only Son into this world, even though at times, it is mired in evil. For God just loves this world so much.
