The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Manuel Mijares, SVD – University of San Carlos, Cebu City
Saturday in the Octave of Easter
The local government unit (LGU) of one small village gave the award, “Parents of the Year,” to a couple who had ten children who all became professionals: engineer, teacher, priest, to name a few. In their acceptance speech, the couple claimed that having ten children in the family was never easy; they took on multiple jobs and did overtime work in order to support the family’s financial needs.
However, despite challenges, they were able to hurdle family life because the risen Christ who has promised hope and resurrection empowered them, strengthened their love and unity in the family.
Their children became prayerful and helpful too in augmenting family income through selling food for“merienda” and sometimes saving their school allowance. The mother, in tears, testified to God’s providential love. She was bold enough to claim that without the power and mercy of God, they would not have survived.
In the first reading, Acts of the Apostles 4:13-21, we read of Peter and John boldly proclaiming the might and power of Jesus by healing the sick. No one could stop the disciples from spreading the good news to all people even to the point of death. It was Jesus’ resurrection that strengthened their faith.
Jesus’ resurrection is a great reminder for us not to be afraid and troubled in times of challenges in life, for God will never abandon us. Jesus rose from the dead to bring us back to the Father, to be with Him with all the angels and saints in heavenly glory.
