Tested Faith

The WORD in other words (2023) by Fr John Sealand SVD – Japan

Friday 2nd Week in Ordinary Time

Mark tells us that Jesus chose twelve men to be his apostles. Their task was  to preach, heal the sick, expel demons and, eventually, lead the church. Because Jesus was a respected rabbi and charismatic leader, this was a great honor.

However, as Jesus well knew, their faith was far from perfect. Because of this, we can imagine how often he prayed that if they would only hold on and not leave him, he would deepen their faith and make them strong. The important thing was to persist and not give up.

Like the apostles, our faith is also tested from time to time. Perhaps, too, like them, we also stumble a little and fall at times.

But we should never become discouraged; all we have to do is to act as Peter once did: we reach out and grasp the hand of Jesus.

Whenever we do that, he will lift us up and give us another chance, hopefully stronger and wiser than we were before.
