Find Rest in Jesus

The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Alex Muana SVD – South Africa

Wednesday 2nd Week of Advent

Anne and Paul were suddenly awakened one night by three intruders who demanded money, beat the couple, and murdered Paul. For two years Anne harbored deep resentment and anger towards those who carried out this dreadful act. Always a positive person, this time, she plunged into depression and lost hope.

One Sunday morning, Anne was in church listening to a homily on forgiveness. It stirred her deeply and knew God was speaking to her. It made her realize that she needed to forgive her attackers and let go of all her burdens to God. Freeing herself from anger and depression that had taken over her life, she found rest in Christ and started to live life anew.

In today’s gospel reading, Jesus speaks about burdens in human life: self- inflicted or caused by others. To all this, Jesus says, “Come to me all you who labor and are overburdened, and I will give you rest” (Mt 11:28).

When we are strong, we believe we can carry and bear all on our backs. There is a weight limit though; the burden becomes heavier with the passing of time. The burden’s weight is proportional to the length of time you decide to carry it on your back. The more time it takes you to free up the burden, the heavier it becomes.

You should know you are not alone. You can’t carry your burden alone; you must leave it to God for you to find rest. Decide to get rid of it and don’t allow time to overcome your ability to bear it. Approach God humbly and Jesus’ promise will come true: “You will find rest for your souls; for my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Mat 11:30).
