Humility and Joy

The Word in other words (2018) by Fr Joe Bique SVD – Argentina

Tuesday 1st Week of Advent

Sometimes we don’t know what we really want. We ask the Lord to open the eyes of our hearts to see the Truth of our faith. Undoubtedly the ways of the Lord are not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts. Allow me to share two points about the readings of today:

1. The only way to encounter God is through humility. As we read in the 1st Letter of Peter: “In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble” (1Peter 5:5). If the wise and the learned that Jesus mentioned in the gospel are those who are proud and self-sufficient, they won’t understand the truth of the Kingdom and may have difficulty knowing the Father.

2. Knowing God and his ways is the source of our joy. Not only our joy but also the joy of the Lord: “Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit…” because he saw the work of the Father in the world through us. This is the joy that the Father has revealed to us: to know the secret of his love that is capable of giving joy to our hearts. The joy in the Holy Spirit is what urges us to know and do His will, to follow him closely. We are a part of the history of salvation by sharing His love to all.

In this Advent season may we have humility in order to encounter Him in our daily lives and prepare ourselves to receive Jesus, not in Bethlehem but in our hearts as he also wants to give us his joy.
