The WORD in other words (2022) by Fr Jose Honorio Mateo SVD – Paraguay
Feast of Saint Andrew, the Apostle – November 30
“Good is the enemy of great,” Jim Collins wrote in his book “Good to Great”. The book is about being a great company and not just simply being good in the business.
Many companies are satisfied with the status quo because it is the easier and more comfortable thing to do. They decide to be good and they remain good. They do not strive to be the best in the business. They do not endeavor to be a great company.
Maybe the same is true in our lives. We do not exert more efforts to lead a great life. We aim to have a good life. And we are contented and happy with the good life we are living.
Andrew was a fisherman. He lived on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Maybe Andrew was happy with his life before he met Jesus. His family was in the fishing business. He was with Simon when Jesus called them.
Business must have been good for the family. He must have been leading a good life by the sea of Galilee. But when Jesus came into his life and called him, Andrew left his nets and followedJesus, at once!
Andrew must have been living a good life, but he was looking for something more in life. He was searching for something bigger, something great.
Life must have been very satisfying for him, but he wanted to have more fulfillment in his life. He wanted to have more meaning in life. And he found Jesus. Or better yet, Jesus found him.
We have many things to learn from the life of Saint Andrew. Today we pray that like him, we may also respond to the call of Jesus and follow him.
When Andrew chose to follow Jesus, he decided to give up what was good in exchange for something great. He had a good life before he met Jesus. He led a great life when he followed Jesus.
