Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica – November 9

The Lateran Basilica is the Cathedral of the Pope. The word “basilica” is a title of honor given to a church. “Lateran” pertains to the Laterani Family who donated the property in the year 311 to the Church. On November 9, 324, the Lateran Basilica was consecrated. Today we celebrate its anniversary.

On this occasion let us heed the word of Jesus in the Gospel of today’s Mass, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” Jesus in another Gospel story proclaims, “My house will be called a House of Prayer.”

Today is also a good opportunity to reflect on the postures we do inside the church. Genuflection is the official gesture for honoring the Blessed Sacrament. Bowing, however, is the Asian way of reverence and adoration. Kneeling is another way of showing worship to God. Standing is a commonly misunderstood posture.

Let’s remember that when we stand, we also express respect and docourtesy, just as when we stand to pay respect to an honored guest. When we stand for communion we show respect to whom we receive. For me standing is an acknowledgement of the supreme sacrifice that Jesus offered on the cross. By his cross, we have been redeemed and became children of the Father. As a child, I can now stand before my Father.

Inside a church the important thing is that God resides there. We solemnly pay respect to him by signs and fulfil the reason for our existence – to praise, thank and glorify him!
