The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Reynaldo Jimenez SVD – SVD Retreat House, Baguio City
Tuesday 31st Week in Ordinary Time
The gospel reminds me of an old movie where the main character plays the role of a thief who woos a beautiful bank teller and successfully makes her fall in love with him. All this he does in order to get inside access and information about the bank she works in. He is successful in stealing something like $10 million dollars then leaves the girl. The twist of the story is that the jilted bank teller happens to be the sole heiress to a multimillion fortune!
We constantly receive unexpected gifts, and at times don’t even realize it, much less appreciate the gifts. Sometimes too, we take for granted the gifts and blessings we already have, or worse do not know their full value nor how to use them. We value some of our possessions over another and usually for the wrong reasons.
The gospel reminds us that gifts have an expiration date. If we do not act on the offer, they may be withdrawn. True, we “earned” the name Christian but it needs to be exercised, specifically through concrete actions.
The Lord gives us all the opportunities to receive his blessings. We not only ask for these but also show we deserve them. Failure to act on the gift of being a Christian results in the loss of the place in the eternal banquet at the end of time.
Now is the time to act as true Christians and authentic followers of Jesus in word and deed, living out and putting into actions the Gospel values and teachings of the Lord.
