Humility is Truth

Saturday 30th Week in Ordinary Time

Do you know Desiderius Erasmus? He was a priest philosopher from the Netherlands who coined the famous phrase: “Humility is truth.”

The whole point of the Gospel today is about humility. And if humility is truth, what is the truth?

The truth is everything we have is borrowed. Or to put it better, all that we have is given to us gratuitously, meaning unearned and undeserved.

Why was I born at this time in history, why not during the time of Rizal? Why the family that I have now? Why am I not American or Indonesian? Why am I pretty? Where does my drive for life come from? Why am I talented in certain areas of life? And so on.…

To answer all the questions, one has only to believe that Someone is responsible for all these. And that Someone has a plan for me. And according to the Bible, that plan ends in the presence of God. Looking at life from this perspective, it is really safe to say that life is borrowed.

Jesus is right: “He who humbles himself shall be exalted”—exalted in God’s presence. Instead of boasting, life should be a continuous “Thank you, Lord.” When our life becomes a series of “Thank you,” time will come when heaven opens up its door for us, and we will hear the words, “You are welcome!”
