God’s Sign

The WORD in other words (2023) by Fr Eusebio Manangbao SVD – St. Joseph Catholic Mission, Sabangan Mt. Province

Monday 28th Week in Ordinary Time

The Gospel for this day is about signs, faith, and forgiveness. This Gospel means that firstly, we must always have faith in God and his plan even when we don’t fully understand all that happens around us. Secondly, if a person desires proof, all he/she must do is look around, and surely he/she shall find it. Finally, despite our arrogance and demands, if we repent, we receive forgiveness.

There is always an interest in the unusual and the spectacular. There is a demand for signs as the ordinary seems not enough to impress or prove anything. It needs wisdom to see the deeper gift, to appreciate what lies hidden in the everyday.

Jonah is the sign of God’s care for all. Jonah’s strength was his trust in God. Prayer is a time of allowing trust in God to grow and become a central part of our being. We pray for a conversion of heart to bring us to a fuller relationship with him, who invites us to live the ordinary in an extraordinary way.

Lord, give us eyes to see the signs that are present and the ability to recognize your presence in the ordinary.
