Blessed Mother

The WORD in other words (2022) by Fr. Glenn Paul Gomez, SVD – Christ the King Seminary, Quezon City

Saturday 27th Week in Ordinary Time

A mother is the embodiment of the sovereignty of God in our lives. A mother teaches us to have confidence and belief in our own selves. A mother knows from experience how important for her child to believe in oneself in order to be whole, strong, and grow with a healthy estimation of oneself.

As I reflect on today’s Gospel, I can’t help but remember Juliana M. Gomez, who gave birth to and raised five children. I am one of them, and I am the youngest. Her love, kindness, dedication, religiosity (a daily Mass goer), and sacrifices are the traits of the best mother.

Mama Mary is not just a mother. She is the Blessed Mother. What made her a blessed mother? Not only because she is the mother of God-Man Jesus, but she has the best two traits; aside from the traits of an earthly mother, she is a listener of God’s word and doer of God’s will.

Besides giving Jesus his daily nurturance from her breast as a child, he acknowledged her many sacrifices. In today’s Gospel, Jesus pointed out her mother’s greatness in a subtle way: Mama Mary is blessed because she heard the Word of God, and she applied it in her daily life!
