Jesus’ Choice

The WORD in other words (2022) by Fr Carlos Macatanga SVD – Canada

Monday 23rd Week in Ordinary Time

We always have a choice: to choose to make a choice is a choice itself. Not to choose is also a valid choice. Choices, options, possibilities, suggestions, and the list goes on and on and on.

This reminds us that life is about making choices: to do good or do evil; to be life-giving or the opposite. If we choose to do good and don’t do it, we lose the opportunity to help others and affirm our innate goodness. As children of God, the most important choice is to choose God: his Word and his commands.

In the Gospel today, Jesus was also confronted with a scenario where he needed to make a choice: to save life or destroy it; to do good or to do evil on the sabbath.

Jesus showed us how to make a good choice in life: to think of others before we think of ourselves. Jesus was not afraid of what the scribes and Pharisees would say; he was more concerned and moved by the suffering of the man whose right hand was withered. He chose to save life and to do good.

May we do the same. May our choices in life be loving and life-giving.
