Church’s Mission

The WORD in other words (2022) by Fr Semei Rebayla SVD – Holy Name University of Tagabilaran

Feast of Saint Bartholomew, August 24

What is the mission of the Church?

The Gospel reading gives us one of the answers, i.e., to make Christ known to others. We read that Philip told Nathanael (or Bartholomew), “We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”

After the conversation, Nathanael went to see Jesus. And that encounter led him to confess that Jesus is the Son of God and the King of Israel. Making Christ known to others is the task of the Church in general and every Christian in particular.

I am newly assigned to the Holy Name University, Tagbilaran City. One thing that I noticed is that every department or office starts its day with a prayer. It simply means that they don’t only focus on their work but primarily on the God of work as well. It is but proper to involve God in our daily lives and activities, lest we easily get involved in an ungodly activity.

Like the said Catholic university, we are all called to imitate the enthusiasm of Philip in leading others back to God. And that we may become as open-minded as Bartholomew in seeking the truth and in knowing Christ in our everyday life.
