I took the reins as the administrator of our retirement and nursing home, Villa Cristo Rey, in May 2020 when there was already an outbreak of the coronavirus. We at Villa Cristo Rey took pride in the effectiveness of our safety protocols for Covid-19. But when we had our first confirmed case of infection in March 2021, I was terrified. What was I afraid of? I was scared because I was not in control.
When Jesus performed this nature-defying miracle, he showed his disciples who was in control. As he and the disciples crossed Lake Galilee, Jesus fell asleep in the boat. Suddenly, a fierce storm threatened to capsize their small boat. The frightened disciples cried out, “Lord, save us!” [v. 25]. With authority, Jesus revealed himself to the disciples as their Lord and Savior. He was Master over the winds and waves and also of the “terrors” that engulfed the human heart. Although the disciples were awed by Jesus’ power, they did not fully comprehend yet “what sort of man” [v. 27] he truly was.
Lord Jesus, I cry out to you for help during this pandemic that endangers the lives of those who are placed under my care. Draw me closer to you, and strengthen my faith so that I can also encourage others to trust in your power, especially in times of adversity.
St. Elizabeth of Portugal courageously endured trials through prayers and works of charity. May I also inspire others to be courageous enough to have complete faith in the Lord who will lead us to salvation.
