Reasons to Believe

The WORD in other words (2018) by Fr Louie Punzalan SVD – Univeristy of San Carlos, Cebu

Friday 4th Week of Easter

Today’s gospel reading is one of the most consoling and reassuring gospel passages in the New Testament. Jesus does not only say, “Have faith in God.” He also says, “Have faith in me.” Believe in God; believe also in me.

You and I are invited to believe in the ultimate goodness and mercy of God who will give us everything He could give. As we continue our journey in this valley of tears, there will come a time when we have to believe what we cannot prove and to accept what we cannot understand. There is a God who will make the unbearable bearable, the unbelievable believable, and the incomprehensible comprehensible.

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.” Heaven is as wide and big as the heart of God. The door of God’s heart will remain forever open. In heaven, in his heart, God will always welcome everyone. There is a place for all of us in the heart of God. No one is dismissed. No one is unimportant. He keeps us in his heart.

In the same way, Jesus adds, “Where I am you also may be,” to remind us that God is our ultimate destiny. Our ultimate home is to be with God forever. In this world our contact with God is mostly shadowy because we can only see through a glass darkly. In heaven we expect to see God face to face, clearly, and perfectly.
