God’s Call to Repentance

Saturday After Ash Wednesday – Lent

Just a few months after we have started the practice of reciting the ten commandments and the five tenets of the church right after the final blessing and before recessional hymn that the parishioners have learned them by heart.

One of the tenets of the church is going to confession at least once a year. However, when we organized  days of communal confession within the season of lent, very few parishioners went to confession.

It dawned on me that indeed knowing by heart is just the first step of the learning process. It is what we do with what we have learned that matters.

Today’s Gospel is once again a reminder of God’s love and mercy towards us. Jesus did not come to condemn us, sinners; rather he is calling all of us to repentance and to a change of heart.

This season of lent is an opportune time to look at our lives and heed the call of Jesus to repentance. Sin, even venial, separates us from ourselves, others and God.

There will be opportunities to go to confession in this season, and we take this opportunity not only to fulfill our catholic obligation but also to be reconciled with ourselves, others and God, and thus experiencing once again freedom, peace, and healing.
